Systemscope Executive Breakfast 2007

Wikis and Waffles

The promises of Web 2.0 have increased the hype around new “killer applications” and piqued the curiosity of many industry sectors, both public and private. “We need a Wiki!” can be heard echoing through the halls of many a government department or agency, in support of more effective program management, policy development and service delivery. Do we?

On October 16, an expert panel of speakers will provide their perspectives.

Date: Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Time: 7:15 am to 9:30 am
Location: Les Saisons
The Westin Hotel
11 Colonel By Drive
Ottawa

Register here or RSVP to Sandy Taylor before October 9th, 2007 at 613.230.8330 ext. 221, or email taylor@systemscope.com.

Many organizations around the world are turning to wikis as a supplemental enabler to their collaboration goals, with varying degrees of success. Within the government context, wikis and other new approaches such as social networks are often overshadowed by a series of intriguing questions, such as: Do they really increase productivity, or detract from it? How secure are they? Can they conflict with CLF2, information management, privacy, bilingualism or other Government of Canada policies and standards?

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Peter Cowan is Director of Enterprise Information Management at Natural Resources Canada he has been involved in building websites and implementing information management solutions for the past 12 years. He is currently working to pilot and implement wikis, blogs and other social and collaborative technologies at NRCan.

Mike Sibly is the General Manager of the Online Services Branch, part of the eBusiness Division of the federal Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources in Australia. A key role of the branch is the highly successful Australian business.gov.au initiative (formerly known as the Business Entry Point).

Dr. Michael Strangelove is widely recognized as one of Canada’s foremost Internet pioneers. Dr. Strangelove’s latest book, The Empire of Mind, was nominated for a Governor-General’s award in 2006. Strangelove’s research explores online audience behaviour, the social consequences of collective interaction via new media systems., and the implications of consumer- generated content.

The event will be a combination of a series short of presentations, made by the above named participants, to be followed by an open panel in which you, as an invited guest, may raise your questions and issues with the panel around the challenges and opportunities associated with innovation in the Government of Canada.
